LEWISTON — Alice M. Whirley, 79, of Lewiston died Sunday, Oct. 7, at the Marshwood Center, following a long illness.

She was born in Auburn on Nov. 15, 1938, the daughter of the late Charles H. Sr. and Nellie M. (Fisher) Cotton, and had been a resident of this community all her life.

She was educated in Lewiston and Auburn schools and later got her GED.

She had married John E. Whirley on Oct. 2, 1959. He died April 8, 1992.

She was employed for many years as a cementer in the local shoe industry, until her retirement.

Alice enjoyed crocheting, word searches, camping, playing cards and beano, and most of all loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She always had an open door, welcoming all of her family and friends.

She is survived by one daughter, Tina Whirley Barnies, and her husband, Adam, of Lewiston; two sisters: Faye Tower of Minot and Mary Lawrence of Turner; seven grandchildren: Shawn, Tieasha, James, Kendra, Kyle, Rebecca and Matthew; 14 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and many nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband and her parents, she was predeceased by a son, John E. Whirley II; two daughters: Vicki Therrien and Penny Hudson; two sisters; a brother; and a granddaughter, Tracy Harris.

Funeral services honoring Alice’s life will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Pinette Dillingham & Lynch Funeral Home. Committal services will then follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Pinette Dillingham & Lynch Funeral Home, 305 Alfred A. Plourde Parkway, Lewiston, 784-4023.
