A Greenfield man is behind bars at the Penobscot County Jail after being arrested for a dozen sex charges involving a child.

A sealed indictment was handed up by a Penobscot County Grand Jury last month against Craig Thorne, 53, on 12 charges of gross sexual assault. Thorne was located and arrested on Rte. 1A in Holden on Oct. 8; he entered an initial plea of not guilty, but was unable to meet bail of $15,000 and is still at the jail.

According to reports, the sexual assaults, which involved a child under 14 years of age, took place over a three year period, between Feb. 12, 2006 and April 15, 2009. No further information was made available by the courts about the victim.

Gross sexual assault is a Class A crime, punishable by up to 30 years in prison and a $50,000 fine. Thorne is next scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 4.
