NORWAY — A small group of residents voted unanimously at Thursday night’s special town meeting to approve amendments to the Norway-Paris Solid Waste interlocal agreement.
The meeting lasted only a few minutes and preceded the regularly scheduled Board of Selectmen meeting.
The biggest change to the agreement was the addition of two alternates to the six-member board.
Each town would add an alternate, who could only vote if there was a tie. Depending on whether it is an odd- or even-numbered year, either the Norway or Paris alternate would vote.
Gary Vaughn, president of the Norway-Paris Solid Waste Board, said another amendment to the agreement would be to change the wording so a board member and an immediate family member cannot serve at the same time.
In other matters, selectmen voted to reclaim the Streaked Mountain School building at 160 Main St. from School Administrative District 17.
In a letter to Norway Town Manager Dennis Lajoie, Superintendent Rick Colpitts wrote the SAD 17 board of directors voted at its Sept. 4 meeting to declare the former Streaked Mountain School “unnecessary for education purposes” and to dispose of the property.
“There is no question under state statute that Norway has a legal right to reclaim school property that is no longer necessary for education purposes that was previously owned by the town prior to the formation of the school district,” Colpitts wrote, adding Streaked Mountain School and the land on which it is located were previously owned by the town.
Last February, some board members said the 164-year-old building was no longer a viable educational space and asked what it would take to move students. Issues cited included the heating system and frozen pipes.
The school is now in leased space at the strip mall across from the high school, on Main Street in Paris.
