Mainers are independent by nature. That is probably why people voted for ranked choice voting. But because of legislative procedures, voters won’t be able to use RCV for the upcoming governor’s election.

Or can they?

I am grateful to all the candidates for running and being willing to take on the hard work of governing this great state. People should be grateful for all the issues candidates raise and the ideas they put forth for consideration. But only one will win that race and people want to be sure that the majority of Mainers support the candidate elected.

Voters can employ their own ranked choice voting. Most people have already chosen their candidates, campaigned for them, supported them, put up their signs. But when Election Day rolls around, they will know if their candidate has any chance of winning.

If not, people can vote for their second choice.
