CANTON — Selectmen voted Thursday night to spend up to $2,500 to build up road turnarounds used by town vehicles and school buses.

Selectman Rob Walker said Staples Hill Road and Farrand Hill Road turnarounds need gravel.

“The one on Farrand Hill would probably take eight loads,” Selectman Don Hutchins said.

The money will come from the road reserve account.

In other news, Chairman Russell Adams said the Fire Department has been “really busy. They took 22 calls since July 1.”

At a recent mill fire in Mechanic Falls, one Canton firetruck pumped water to three trucks at one time, Hutchins said. “And we pumped the most water and we’re pretty proud of that.”

In other business, Lake Anasagunticook Association members Tim Kirwan and Diane Ray spoke to selectmen about their work maintaining the health of the lake, which straddles the town line with Hartford.

Kirwan, a summer resident of Hartford for more than 30 years, was elected president of the association a couple of months ago. He said the association plans to do a watershed survey in May 2019.

He said members need the support of selectmen and others such as code enforcement and law enforcement officers.

Selectman Hutchins said the association is doing good work. “We, the town and the Lake Association have had some challenges and I think that if we look more forward and don’t look back, the relationship we build is good for everybody.”

“This is going to build our economy, this is going to take care of the lake, this is exciting. It’s kind of another piece in the whole puzzle of how we’re going to build our town,” Hutchins said.
