The German army is suffering from a gasoline famine, says the Matin. At many places allies have found tractors in perfect condition which had been abandoned for lack of gasoline.

50 years ago: 1968

A school for Lewiston election workers will be held Friday evening and directed by Lewiston City Clerk Gerald Berube. All election workers have been asked to attend the session, which will begin at 7 p.m. at the 8th District Courtroom in Lewiston City Building. Some 152 workers have been hired by the city for the general election representing an increase of 22 over the last presidential election. The increase was explained by the fact that voters will have five ballots to mark this year.

25 years ago: 1993

The United Society of Shakers is pleased to offer a holiday workshop entitled, Pantry Basket. The workshop will be held Saturday, Nov. 20, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village on Route 26. Make this utilitarian basket for yourself or for a holiday gift. The basket measures 13-by-9-by-4 feet with a short handle that allows it to on shallow pantry shelves. Materials to bring are a bucket, clothespins, towel, pencil, awl, knife, scissors and ruler.
