Mary Jeanne “Jane” LaChance Safrit
1921 – 2018
SALISBURY, N.C. – Mary Jeanne “Jane” LaChance Safrit, 96, passed away on Nov. 5, 2018, at Magnolia Gardens after a long battle with dementia. She was born in Lewiston on Nov. 24, 1921, to French-Canadian parents, Louisa LaRochelle LaChance and Francois LaChance.
She was a member of Saint Joseph’s Catholic Church, Kannapolis, N.C., and retired from #6 Weave Room of Cannon Mills. During WW II, she proudly served her country as a member of the Women’s Army Corps where she met her husband of 39 years, James R. Safrit Jr. Jane was also a member of the American Legion and enjoyed volunteering at the Salisbury VA hospital. She loved to sew, crochet and make ceramics in her spare time.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death her sister, Diana Vecchio; son, Michael R. Safrit; and special friend, Clifford Davis. She leaves behind a daughter, Gina Safrit, a son, Sam Safrit; as well as seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and furbaby, Jackie.
A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, Nov. 12, 2018 at Whitley’s Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery with military honors. Her family will receive friends from 2-3 p.m., prior at Whitley’s. Online condolences may be left at www.whitleysfuneralhome.com
