100 years ago: 1918

The Lewiston-Auburn Community Chorus “sing” in Lewiston City hall Wednesday evening should be a joyous occasion and all Lewiston and Auburn are invited to meet and express their thankfulness for peace. The Lewiston Journal tonight prints the words of the new songs to be rehearsed and all who attend are urged to cut them out and bring them to the rehearsal. The songs include the old and the new song, ”My Daddy’s Coming Home,” which has come out since the signing of peace.

50 years ago: 1968

The man who shook up the auto industry and woke the conscience of Congress to the need for automobile safety is scheduled to speak at Bates College. Wednesday evening. Ralph Nader, lawyer and author of “Unsafe at Any Speed” is to lecture on “Environmental Hazards Man Made and Man Remedied” at 8 p m. in the College Chapel. The lecture is open to the public.

25 years ago: 1993

“Bob” Haldeman, President Nixon’s fiercely protective chief of staff who served 18 months in prison for covering up the Watergate break-in, died of abdominal cancer in his home overlooking the Pacific Ocean. His son, Hank, said he had been ill for only a month. Nixon said he was saddened by the news. “Ever since he joined my vice presidential staff as a young advance man in the 1956 election, I have known Bob Haldeman to be a man of rare intelligence. strength, integrity and outage.” Nixon said in a statement. “As my White House chief of staff, he played an indispensable role in turbulent times as our administration undertook a broad range of initiatives at home and abroad.”
