TURNER — The Board of Selectmen voted Monday night to schedule the annual town meeting on Saturday, April 6, 2019.

The board said the 2018 meeting was moved to May to line up with the school budget vote, but they didn’t see any real benefit from it.

“Let’s just go back to our normal date,” Selectmen Angelo Terreri said.

The board needs to schedule the annual town meeting in advance to know when budgets and nominations for officers are due.

The board also agreed Monday to ask the Highway Department to use only salt for the Fire Department’s central station parking lot during the winter.

Previously the department has used a salt and sand mixture, but Fire Chief Rodney Guptill asked if they could get just salt, because the sand was ruining the flooring of the rescue barn.

Town Manager Kurt Schaub said because the Town Hall already gets only salt, and the fire station nearby, it would be convenient.

The board also heard a request from resident Michelle Green for an exception to a zoning ordinance in order to open a wedding and event barn in a rural zone.

Board Chairman Kurt Youland said the board can’t make any decisions until the Planning Board has voted on the matter. At that point the selectmen could vote either way.

“When you start allowing things that aren’t allowed, you need to think about how it will affect people,” Youland said.

He suggested that Green survey all of the surrounding neighbors first, to see if anyone disagrees with the change.

“I give you a lot of credit for wanting to start something like this, but the Planning Board and the town would need to vote on it first,” Youland said.

Schaub also said that after several complaints from voters at the recent election about the poor lighting outside Town Hall, the town will look into outdoor lighting options.

The board also announced that the Town Office will be closed Thursday and Friday for the Thanksgiving holiday.
