DEAR SUN SPOTS: Do you know if any of the supermarkets in our area will be giving free turkeys to shoppers who purchase a certain amount of groceries? If so, which stores and how much does the shopper need to spend to earn the free turkey? Thank you.

— Wendy, no town

ANSWER: I know I’m getting to this question a bit late but I’ve been waiting to see what area supermarkets are offering in the way of discounts. Both Shaw’s and Hannaford have frozen turkeys for 39 cents per pound and Shaw’s has fresh turkeys for 88 cents per pound (over 10 pounds). At Shaw’s, they have a limit of one and Hannaford has a four-turkey limit. That’s pretty reasonable!

DEAR SUN SPOTS: Calvary United Methodist Church in Lewiston serves two free meals each week to folks in the neighborhood and anyone who needs company and some good home-cooked food. Recently our trusty microwave stopped working. We’re wondering if one of your readers might have one in good working order that they no longer need and would be willing to donate. They can leave a message at 207-782-3221 or 207-504-6043. Thanks for getting the word out for us, and for all you do!

— Pat, Lewiston

ANSWER: Thank you for all YOU do!

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I have a friend who needs to find someone to either repair or replace a zipper in his snowmobile pants. I know in the past that you have listed names or businesses that offer this type of service. As I didn’t have a need for it, I never kept the list, which I now wish I had. Would you please give me an update on people available for this service in the Lewiston-Auburn area or surrounding towns?

I enjoy your column so much and find it very informational. Keep up the good work! You do a great service for so many people. Thank you very much.

— Sharon, Turner

ANSWER: Oftentimes, a dry cleaning service has a seamstress they can call to do this type of work. Beal’s at 51 Hampshire St. in Auburn is one place that provides this service. They are open Monday-Friday from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Give them a call at 207-784-8581.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: The Lewiston Public Library is still looking for a new volunteer driver who is interested in helping the library promote its programs. This dedicated person needs to be willing to drive to various locations around the Twin Cities and distribute library flyers and promotions to local businesses. Library staff will contact you and let you know we have flyers ready to distribute. You will come to the library to pick them up on the second floor. Once you have the flyers, just visit each location according to the instructions we will give you.

We ask that the volunteer do this two or three times a month. You will need reliable transportation, proof of automobile insurance and a phone number or email that you regularly check. Applicants should contact Ruby Jones, Adult Services librarian, at rjones@lewistonmaine.gov or 207-513-3004, ext. 3508.

— Alex, Lewiston

ANSWER: This sounds fun, and a great way to meet new people without having a big time commitment. Get involved with your local library! You will be amazed at what’s happening.
