DEAR SUN SPOTS: Volunteers are needed to keep the free tax preparation site open at the Norway Public Library. Unless more volunteers step up, a very valuable, free service will be lost. For over 10 years, totally free income tax preparation and electronic filing has been available at the Norway Public Library for low- to moderate-income residents of Norway, South Paris and surrounding towns. Currently, there aren’t enough volunteers to continue this program.

If you prepare your own tax return on tax software, are not a snowbird and are available either Fridays or Saturdays through February to mid-April, perhaps you can help. Please consider volunteering to enable this much-needed program to continue.

Last year, volunteers assisted approximately 600 taxpayers of all ages, with special attention to those 50 years and older. This included preparing and filing electronically both federal and state of Maine income tax returns as well as answering a wide variety of questions. Return preparation included assisting those who only needed to file a state of Maine return to receive Property Tax Fairness credit or the Sales Tax Credit, or both.

This free, no-strings-attached tax preparation program is presented by AARP Foundation Tax-Aide. There is no requirement that someone be a member of AARP in order to take advantage of this program or to volunteer. Volunteers are reimbursed for mileage.

To volunteer or learn more, please contact, District Coordinator Joan Jagolinzer at jagolinzer@gwi.net or go to aarpfoundation.org/taxaidevolunteer. Give back to your community and meet new people.

ANSWER: Cathy is referring to Charlotte’s note about her collection of canceled stamps in the Dec. 4 Sun Spots. I’m so glad that Sun Spots helped these two find each other. This is what this column is all about!

DEAR SUN SPOTS: Where can I find Morin the painter, and is Bix the furniture stripper still around?

DEAR SUN SPOTS: What happened to Dr. Pimple Popper? She was on TV for about six weeks, had reruns about three weeks, and is now off the air. Can you find out what happened and if she’s coming back?

— No name, no town

ANSWER: My kids and grandkids love this crazily gross, yet weirdly satisfying television show on TLC. The popular Dr. Pimple Popper will return to the network in January for a second season.

Meanwhile, if you have access to the internet, you can watch on YouTube or even follow on Instagram. Dr. Sandra Lee is a dermatologist in Southern California who is followed by millions. She has made it her mission in life to give expert advice on skin care to the masses through social media. You, too, can watch countless hours of blackhead, whitehead and cyst extractions. There is even a website: drpimplepopper.com.

This column is for you, our readers. It is for your questions and comments. There are only two rules: You must write to the column and sign your name (we won’t use it if you ask us not to). Please include your phone number. Letters will not be returned or answered by mail, and telephone calls will not be accepted. Your letters will appear as quickly as space allows. Address them to Sun Spots, P.O. Box 4400, Lewiston, ME 04243-4400. Inquiries can also be emailed to sunspots@sunjournal.com
