FARMINGTON — Regional School Unit 9 Superintendent Tina Meserve is using social media to keep the community up-to-date on the variety of events, activities, and special happenings throughout the district. Recent posts to the Mt. Blue Regional School District Facebook page included a video of pre-k students singing and playing the bells; photos of food service staff serving a district-wide traditional turkey dinner; and a notice that the Pathways for All Learners teaching position had been filled.

“We have ways of communicating with students and parents,” said Meserve. “The challenge is getting the message about all the things going on in the district to the broader community.”

Most community members do not know about all the programs offered by the district, she said. Meserve extended an invitation to those in the RSU 9 community to follow the page.

“My goal is to use social media to keep our communities informed about the district,” she added. “The purpose of our Facebook page is to celebrate students and staff. It is also a way to show our communities the different programs, services, clubs, sports, community collaborations we offer. It is also used to acknowledge students and staff who are receiving awards and recognition for the quality of their work.”

While the district page highlights the entire district, school principals and club leaders may use social media sites to share information specific to individual programs. The district page is updated regularly, said Meserve.

“We currently have 1300 followers but those are mostly parents, students and staff.,” she said. “My hope is that we can reach retired people, those without children, and business and municipal leaders.”

Meserve said the district Facebook page also served as a model of healthy social media use for students.

“This is about children and modeling what we want children to learn,” she added. “Posts will always be limited to news that celebrates or informs.”

Meserve said those with questions or concerns about the district or news on social media pages should contact her at 778-6571.
