BUCKFIELD — A 24-year-old man from Buckfield died Wednesday night when his car crossed the centerline on Route 117 and collided with a pickup truck.

Alexander Pond was killed at about 5 p.m. when his Volkswagen Beetle hit an oncoming Ford F-350 that was hauling a trailer, according to police.

Stacy Cobb, 55, of Wayne was driving the pickup. He was taken to a hospital to be treated for injuries not considered to be life-threatening, according to Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety.

Police have not said why Pond crossed the centerline, according to McCausland.

The head-on crash occurred near the intersection of Cross Road, just beyond a concrete bridge that crosses the Nezinscot River.

A section of Route 117 was closed for more than five hours while police investigated the accident.

The Oxford County Sheriff’s Office, Paris Police Department and Buckfield Fire and Rescue assisted Maine State Police at the scene.
