Chief Field and the Lewiston Police were mighty glad to hear of a bill being introduced in the Senate to increase the pay in that department. Chief Field and the police have felt for some time that the men have been underpaid. The patrolmen have not been paid as much as the shovelers on the street, said Chief Field to the Journal this morning. The policemen’s pay has been $2.76 per day and the shovelers have been receiving $3.50 per day.

Nancy Kerrigan skated Sunday for the first time since she was assaulted at the national championships and said “it felt good to be on the ice again.” Kerrigan tested her battered right knee for the first time since the Jan. 6 attack at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Detroit. “My knee was a little stiff and it took some time to get loosened up, but it felt good to be on the ice again.” With Kerrigan at the rink were members of her family and Dr. Mahlon Bradley, an orthopedic specialist who has worked with her since the assault. Kerrigan performed only basic strokes, not attempting any jumps. The injury forced Kerrigan to withdraw from the national championship, which was won by Tonya Harding. Both were later named to the U.S. Olympic team for the Winter Games in Norway next month.
