CHESTERVILLE — A special town meeting has been called for 6:30 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 24, to see if voters will approve spending up to $35,000 for replacement and repairs of the Town Hall.

Sunday night, Jan. 20, selectman Edward Hastings IV said the board had been discussing the roof for some time. Leaks in the roof have been getting worse and water has been dripping on the computers. Staff have been placing plastic over the computers to protect them.

“The ceiling tiles are bulging in places. If we wait for the March town meeting they could fall. We at least wanted to get approval for the money. With recent weather it may be some time before the replacement can happen, but the company has said they plan to do it as soon as possible,” Hastings said.

On Jan. 10 the board approved calling a special town meeting with money for the roof replacement to come from undesignated funds. The board had received a bid of $28,900 from CO Beck and Sons. The company had done the roof in the 1980s and is familiar with it, he said.

Hastings said the board asked for $35,000 as it was a more even number. Since then the board has learned there are some spots in the roof with not much insulation.

“$5,000 will allow four inches of insulation on the whole roof,” he said.
