With the Independent Alliance taking over the Democratic party and the Civic Alliance of the Republican party, as some dope it out, it wouldn’t be a bad plan to shift the name to the Democratic club of the Independent Alliance and the Republican club of the Civic Alliance.

50 years ago: 1969

Conditional acceptance of the New Sherwood Heights Elementary School is expected to be recommended by the subcommittee of the Auburn School Committee, according to Auburn Schools Superintendent Lewis E. Webber.

25 years ago: 1994

Rep. Louis Jalbert formally announced Thursday that he has “definitely decided to step down” from the House seat he has held for the past 10 years. After 10 years, it is time for a new face, Jalbert said, adding that he was reluctantly leaving. “I’ve enjoyed the work … and I won’t be retiring out of sight. They’ll hear from me.” With the new term regulations, he said he would only have been able to serve one more term in the Legislature.
