LEWISTON — Parts of the downtown went dark Thursday after an underground circuit blew at about 3:30 p.m.

Among the buildings that lost power were the U.S. Post Office, the Public Library and the Sun Journal. Central Maine Power officials said the outage affected a small area encompassing Ash, Park and Pine streets and surrounding areas.

Power was restored at about 6 p.m.

On Lisbon Street, between Pine and Ash, businesses were dark on one side of the street but lit up on the other.

CMP crews worked underground near the corner of Park and Main streets to repair the damaged circuit. It was not immediately clear what caused it to fail.

While business was brought to a halt at the library, the newspaper and other locations, the rest of the downtown was unaffected.

The library and the post office both closed early when the power went down. Both were expected to open Friday morning.
