LEXINGTON, Va. – Allan K. Lavine, 71, of Turner, passed away at his winter home in Lexington, Va, on Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2019, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Auburn on Feb. 14, 1947, Al was the son of George and Doris Lavine.

He attended Auburn schools and was a 1966 graduate of Edward Little High School. After graduation, Al joined the US Navy and served aboard the USS Coral Sea (CVA-43) until 1959. While in the Navy he earned the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Service Medal, Navy Unit Commendation (twice) and the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal.

After his service in the Navy, Al graduated from Central Maine Technical College, earning a degree as a Machinist. This was his lifelong career until his retirement, due to poor health, in 2004.

On July 5, 1980, Al married Carol A. Wright Lavine and they moved to Greene where they raised their four children. Al was the quintessential “Jack of all trades.” He was an avid car and motorcycle enthusiast and built or modified several Harley-Davidsons and street-rodded old Fords. He was a founding member of the Temperamentals Racing Team and a member of Down East Street Rods. Over the years, he and his wife remodeled an old farmhouse and designed and built two homes.

This humble, quiet, strong and talented man was dearly loved by his wife, Carol; three stepdaughters, Kristen Bernier McCabe (Eugene), Rachel Bernier Gaskill (Ryan), and Carly Bernier Farkas (Jeremy); ten grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and many lifelong friends.

Al was predeceased by his parents; his only sibling Robert Lavine; his only child Joshua Lavine; and his stepgrandson Braeden Farkas.
