MONMOUTH – Richard Wallace Allen, 80, passed away on Saturday, Feb. 2, 2019, with his family by his side, at Androscoggin Hospice in Auburn, after a short illness. He was born on Sep. 3, 1938 in Litchfield, the son of Reginald and Irene (Munn) Allen.

Richard was married to Caroline Black for 61 years. They were married on Aug. 30, 1957 and made their home in Monmouth. He attended Litchfield schools and graduated from Litchfield Academy in 1956, thirteenth in his class. He worked various jobs before starting work in state liquor enforcement in 1968. He retired in 2001 as assistant director of the Maine Liquor Enforcement Bureau. After high school he joined the Marines. He volunteered on the Monmouth Fire Department. He was also a Cub Scout master and a Little League coach. He served as a deacon and youth leader at the South Monmouth Baptist Church and on various town committees.

He is survived by his wife Caroline; three sons and their wives, Martin and Linda, William and Pamela, Thomas and Barbara; and nine grandchildren and spouses, Jacob, Rachel, Ryan and Ellen, Katelyn, Christopher, Michael and Kelly, Chelsea, Zachary, and Madison and Brandon. He is also survived many nieces and nephews and a close family friend, Joyce Larrabee.

He was predeceased by his parents; and siblings, Marilyn Allen Smith, James Allen, Sr., Kenneth Peter Allen, Sr., and Robert Allen.

The family would like to thank the medical staff at CMMC as well as the staff at the Androscoggin Hospice House for their dedication and the support they provided. A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 a.m. on February 23, at the Winthrop United Methodist Church. Fellowship will follow the service.
