HARRISON— The inaugural Harrison Recreation Department Polar Fest may be a month later than planned, but officials say the two-day event is still set to provide a wide range of family fun ranging from sledding to cross country skiing and ice sculpting contests.

The two-day event, which was initially set for January 12 and 13 but was canceled due to lack of snow, will now kick off on Saturday, Feb. 23 at the RADR recreation complex on Route 117, at 669 Norway Road, with some events to be held on Long Lake and continue on Sunday. Feb. 24.

The festival will start at 9 a.m. on February 23 and run though 8 p.m. and then reopen on Sunday, February 24 at 9 a.m., ending at 2 p.m.

“We will have sledding, tubing, snowman building, snow sculpture contests and a cardboard box race,“ said Kayla Laird, Harrison recreation director. “We will have a large bonfire Saturday night starting at 5 p.m. and snow sculptures will be judged on Sunday.”

The Polar Fest will also offer free events including sledding, snowshoeing, snow golf, snow painting, cross country skiing plus special events at Long Lake including ice skating, pond hockey, curling. Contests include Jack and Jill race, cardboard box race, snow sculpting and a kids’ snowman contest.

The snack shack, which is located on site at the RADR complex, will be serving soup, chili, coffee, popcorn and more. .

Laird thought up the public event and hopes it will become an annual event.

Key to its success will be the help of volunteers.

“I am still looking for volunteers,” she said. “This is a great opportunity for students that are looking to fulfill their community service hours for school.”

Meanwhile folks are reminded that this coming weekend, Saturday Feb. 16, the 3rd annual Family Ice Fishing Derby gets underway. Registrations are open online as well as at the Town Office and on the morning of the derby at the Boat Launch until 9a.m.

Anglers must be registered to win a prize which will be awarded to the top three anglers in each age group for the biggest fish.

Laird said there will also be raffles and giveaways.

The Lions Club will be selling breakfast sandwiches starting at 7 a.m. as well burgers and hot dogs for lunch.
