FARMINGTON — Police say a local man was taken into custody early Thursday at a Farmington Falls Road home when he kicked a police officer who was trying to arrest him.
Joseph Wright-Champagne, 24, of Farmington was arrested on a felony charge of assault on an officer and misdemeanor charges of violation of condition of release, refusing to submit to arrest or detention (physical force) and disorderly conduct (loud, unreasonable noise), according to the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office booking log.
A neighbor reported hearing a male and a female yelling inside the residence at 12:53 a.m., according to Bonnie Pomeroy, secretary for the Farmington Police Department.
Officer Brandon Sholan and Sgt. Michael Lyman responded to the call, and asked Wright-Champagne to take a blood-alcohol test because of bail conditions from an unrelated offense that prohibit him from consuming alcohol, she said.
Wright-Champagne refused to take the test. He then grew combative and kicked Sholan, according to Pomeroy.
Wright-Champagne was taken to the Franklin County Detention Center in Farmington, where he was being held Thursday on $1,000 bail, according to a corrections officer.
A conviction on the felony charge is punishable by up to five years in prison and a $5,000 fine. The misdemeanors each carry maximum penalties of six months in jail and a $1,000 fine.
