Leeds Historical Society publishes anthology

LEEDS — The first volume of the long awaited anthology of Leeds stories, “Out of Our Past: A Collection of Stories about Leeds, Maine,” compiled by the Leeds Historical Society is off the press and ready for sale. The more than 30 stories range from a poem by Elsie M. Bryant, written in 1901 at the time of the Leeds Centennial, to a Civil War letter from Thomas Lindsay, a history of the Leeds Community Church, and a 1937 report from the county’s school nurse.

Read about Leeds geography, about farms in Leeds spanning the 1900s, the Springbrook Golf Club, the history of Blue Rock Industries and Bancroft & Martin, or what it was like to work in Swain’s Mill or the Leeds Corn Shop. Or learn about hunting bear in the 1850s, ghostly “Peppermint John,” or an account of a possible murder in Leeds. All these and more can be found in “Out of Our Past: a Collection of Stories about Leeds, Maine.”

Anyone reminded of stories to share about Leeds should call Pam Bell at 207-933-4121 or email her at pwbell@fairpoint.net.

The books cost $15 and are available at the Leeds Town Office or by calling Laura Juraska at 207-524-2324.
