Leonard J. “Slim” Barrieau

RUMFORD – Mr. Leonard J. “Slim” Barrieau, 94, died Monday, Feb. 1, 2021, at his daughter’s home in Mexico. He lived with his daughter Sue for the past three years and was a resident of Prospect Avenue for many years prior to moving to Florida.

Born in Rumford, on Nov. 24, 1926, he was a son of Oliver and Bella (Arsenault) Barrieau. He was a graduate of Stephens High School class of 1947. He served in the U.S. Navy as a seaman first class. Slim worked as a beater engineer for Boise Cascade Paper Mill in Rumford until his retirement 1987. He also served as the Treasurer for Local 900.

Slim was a communicant of the Parish of the Holy Savior St. Athanasius St. John Church, he was an avid New York Yankees fan, he enjoyed his camp at Concord Pond, which he built, he enjoyed winters in Clermont, Fla., skiing, and he served as Assessor for the Town of Rumford.

He was married in Rumford, on Jan. 21, 1950, to Yvonne Lanteigne who died in Rumford on Sept. 15, 2016.

Survivors include his three daughters, Sandy Barrieau of Mexico, Suzanne Brown and husband Nick of Mexico, JoAnn Broomhall and husband Scott of Rumford, sons, Timothy and his wife Lisa of Rumford and Jeff of Orlando, Fla., five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, a granddaughter, Niki Keogh, a sister, Elmina Beaudet, a brother, Buster Barrieau.

Funeral services will be held at a later date. Interment will be in the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Augusta. Arrangements are under the direction of the Meader and Son Funeral Home, 3 Franklin St., Rumford.
