PARIS — Save a Lot in Paris again partnered with Oxford’s Moss Creek Church to organize its annual Bags for a Brighter Holiday. Moss Creek Church distributed 488 meals for Christmas that were sponsored by the grocery store chain. Its grocery customers purchase the bags for $4.99 each.

Save a Lot’s corporate parent encourages participation in the holiday food drive every year, awarding donations to the community partners who deliver the food on behalf of its stores. The 488 bags garnered the South Paris store bronze level recognition for its efforts and gained a $250 donation from the company for the church.

Save a Lot spokesman Rick Cook said there were 76 fewer bags purchased this year, likely a factor of less store traffic.

“Since the pandemic began, a lot of regular customers don’t come in as often,” Cook acknowledged.

Similarly, Moss Creek Church has had fewer opportunities to fund raise for its food assistance programs in 2020. One activity the church missed out on for collecting money was due to the Oxford Fair being cancelled last September; the group traditionally has sold tickets and managed attendee parking at the fair.

Each Christmas meal bag contained pasta, a muffin mix, canned vegetables and tuna and a cornbread mix. Moss Creek Church then purchases a four pound ham to match each bag. Church members distribute the meals to families throughout Oxford Hills
