YARMOUTH – Maxine Alice Hall Deroche of Oxford died on Feb. 6, 2021, at the Brentwood Center for Health and Rehabilitation in Yarmouth. She lived her 97 years fully and was strongly independent until last September when she broke a shoulder and landed in the hospital, never returning to her home.

Born in Wilton on Aug. 31, 1923, to C. Louis Hall and S. Pauline Campbell, Maxine had one sister, Frances Rita who passed away two years ago. Maxine learned self-reliance and independence early on. Growing up in the depression years taught her a lot about frugality, working hard, being tough.

In high school Maxine had already met the love of her life, Thomas T. Deroche. They married in November 1942 while he was on leave from the Marines. Most of their married lives were spent in the Norway-Paris area, where they ran Tom’s Restaurant for many years. Some said they made the best pizza in five counties! Maxine continued waitressing well into her latter years. She was always well remembered at Market Square.

They raised three children, one basset hound and many kitties. There was a great love for the outdoors, camping, fishing, boating. Maxine’s handwork was especially fine; she was an excellent knitter and member of the local knitting club, her work won prizes at many of the local fairs.

She was devoted to her church, the South Paris Universalist Church, and surrounded by all the love they gave.

She will be so deeply missed by everyone, especially her children, Diane Parkin and Michael of Ottawa, Canada; Ted Deroche and Brenda of Waycross, Georgia; Cynthia Atkinson and Bob of Scarborough, Maine; the grandchildren, Brett, Erika, Jeremy, Jennifer, Eric, Sean and Ryan; and the two great-grandchildren, William and Cole. As well, all the cousins who were so close, her half-brother, Frank Hall and Carol, and her cousin, Bette Behana.

The family hopes (Covid willing) to have a memorial service and burial in the late spring or summer.

Arrangements are under the care of Chandler Funeral Homes and Cremation Service, 45 Main St., South Paris. Online condolences may be shared with her family at http://www.chandlerfunerals.com
