CLEMSON, S.C. — Former Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence will have surgery on his left, non-throwing shoulder before the NFL draft.
Lawrence’s representative, Kyle Strongin of MGC Sports, said Lawrence scheduled a workout for NFL personnel on Friday instead of waiting for Clemson’s pro day on March 11 because of the upcoming surgery. Strongin did not specify when the procedure would happen.
Lawrence, the 6-foot-6 passer who finished second in Heisman Trophy balloting to Alabama receiver Devonta Smith, is expected to be the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL draft by the Jacksonville Jaguars.
He led Clemson to three Atlantic Coast Conference titles and the 2018 national championship. He finished 34-2 in three seasons as a starter. The Tigers reached the College Football Playoff in all of those seasons.
TEXAS: Texas will pay former Longhorns quarterback Vince Young $100,000 annually as a special assistant to the athletic director.
The College Football Hall of Famer was rehired by the program in December and returned to campus Jan. 4. Texas released his employment agreement Wednesday under a public records request.
The document said Young would report to Athletic Director Chris Del Conte but did not include any specific job duties. The job is subject to annual renewal.
Young returns to campus at a time the program is trying to build momentum behind new head coach Steve Sarkisian.
Young led the Longhorns to the 2005 season national championship with a last-minute touchdown against USC. Sarkisian was an assistant on that Trojans team.
After his NFL career ended, Young filed for bankruptcy and returned to Texas in a full-time, $100,000-a-year job as a career development officer in the school’s Division of Diversity and Community Engagement. The job later became part time and Young was eventually dismissed for poor performance and often being absent from work or not in touch with his supervisors.
Former Texas Heisman Trophy winner Earl Campbell, former women’s basketball coach Jody Conradt and former athletic director DeLoss Dodds also are paid as special assistants in the department.
IOWA: Running backs coach Derrick Foster and offensive line coach Tim Polasek are leaving for other jobs and offensive lineman Mark Kallenberger will forego a fifth year of eligibility, Coach Kirk Ferentz announced.
Foster will take a job with an NFL team and Polasek will become offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Wyoming. Ferentz didn’t say which NFL team hired Foster.
Several media reports have said he will become the Los Angeles Chargers’ running backs coach.
Foster, who has also held the position of offensive recruiting coordinator, was hired at Iowa in 2018. Polasek joined the Iowa staff in 2017.
Kallenberger started 9 of 22 career games at the tackle and guard positions. He started four games at right tackle in 2020, missing two games because of injury.
