RUMFORD – Mrs. Joyce Smith, 85, passed away on Saturday, Feb. 6, 2021, at the Rumford Hospital. She was a resident of Osgood Ave in Mexico.

Born in Rumford, on Oct. 7, 1935, she was a daughter of William and Thelma (McCray) Kenney. Joyce was a graduate of Mexico High School and was a Communicant of the Parish of The Holy Savior, St. Athanasius St. John Church.

She was married at Bolling AFB in Washington, D.C., on Aug. 27, 1958, to Alfred Smith who survives of Mexico.

Other survivors include her sons, Daniel Smith and wife Brenda of Weld, and their two children Ashley and Darren; Dean Smith of Mexico, and his two children, Taylor and Tyler; David Smith and his companion Diane Ronan of Florida, and her son Dylan; daughters, Patricia Swafford and husband Lester of Rumford, and their two children Orbin and Bode; Margaret “Peggy” Smith of Florida, and her feline friend, Worthley. She also leaves behind a sister, Sally Clark of Dixfield.

She was predeceased by her son, Darren, and brother, Jim Kenney.

Joyce was an avid Bingo player, always appreciated a good yard-sale bargain, and relished the taste of whoopie-pies and Snickers bars. She spent many summers enjoying the family camp located at Worthley Pond. She and her husband Alfred loved to go out dancing and did so for many years. Always very generous, Joyce would give you the shirt off her back if you needed it. It would never matter the situation, she was always committed to rooting for the underdog. She enjoyed the great outdoors and loved to admire nature, animals, and children playing and laughing. More often than not, she had a book on her and would glean wisdom from a number of different texts. She did not enjoy being told what to do and remained a free-spirit for all of her days.

Funeral services will be held in the spring. Interment will be in St. John Cemetery in Rumford. Arrangements are under the direction of the Meader & Son Funeral Home, 3 Franklin St., Rumford, Maine.
