An adult associated with the Winslow High School vs. Waterville Senior High School boys’ varsity basketball game on Feb. 11 has tested positive for COVID-19, both school districts announced.

In messages to the community posted Monday, district administration officials wrote that the unidentified person associated with the Thursday game, which Winslow won 82-20 at home, had tested positive for the virus.

Both districts’ instructional hybrid learning models will not be interrupted when school resumes on Monday, Feb. 22, after this week’s vacation.

Winslow Superintendent Peter Thiboutot wrote that a case investigator from the Maine Center for Disease Control & Prevention informed district administration about the case. Contact-tracing of people associated with the infected adult was completed by the time the letter was sent out.

“If you are reading this email and you have not been contacted by either the school nurse or a member of the administrative team, then your child is not considered a close contact,” Thiboutot wrote to the school community. “As always, due to the health and privacy rights of the individual who tested positive, we will not be releasing their name. Please know that the safety of our students and staff is our top priority.”

Waterville Senior High School Principal Brian Laramee wrote in his letter that the districts’ nursing staff worked together in tandem to complete the contact-tracing.

It wasn’t immediately clear how many people identified as close contacts with the adult may have had to quarantine.

“We are notifying the community in an effort to eliminate any misinformation and to take the opportunity to reinforce the importance of wearing masks and face coverings, washing hands, and maintaining proper social distancing,” Laramee wrote.
