Youth group to put scarves in park for homeless

LEWISTON — St. Michael’s Church Youth Group of Auburn will be in Kennedy Park at 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 18, to hang scarfs around for the homeless.

 

YWCA to hold lifeguard review course

LEWISTON — The YWCA will offer a lifeguard review course for those with an American Red Cross lifeguard certificate that expired/expires between March 15, 2020 and June 30, 2021. The course is both online and in person.

Upon registration, participants will need to complete the online portion prior to the in-water skills assessment. They must have a current lifeguard manual and pocket mask. Prerequisites include completion of a 300-yard swim, treading water and timed deep water object removal.

The course will take place from 1 to 6 p.m. Saturday, March 27, and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, March 28, at the YWCA Central Maine, 130 East Ave. The cost is $200. Diocese of Portland offers special Lenten website

PORTLAND — Lent, which began Ash Wednesday, Feb. 17, and ends on Holy Thursday, April 1, is a period of spiritual renewal that helps parishioners prepare for the celebration of Easter. The three pillars of the Lenten season are prayer, fasting and almsgiving.

A special Lent section, portlanddiocese.org/lent-resources, has been launched on the Diocese of Portland website featuring a variety of resources to assist on the Lenten journey.

UMA announces equity, inclusion scholarships

AUGUSTA — Recognizing diversity is an essential element of academic excellence, the University of Maine at Augusta (UMA) is offering equity and inclusion scholarships to students whose academic achievement and varied experiences will enhance and enrich the education of all UMA students and the institution’s educational mission.

Equity and inclusion scholars may receive up to four years of funding, provided they continuously enroll each fall and spring semester in either full- or part-time study in a graduate or undergraduate program and maintain the minimum GPA requirements of the scholarship.

Scholarship funds may be used to cover education-related expenses, including tuition and fees. UMA anticipates awarding two graduate and five undergraduate scholarships each year. The application deadline is Monday, March 15, and scholarships will be awarded beginning fall 2021. For details and to complete the application, visit uma.edu/eischolarship.
