100 Years Ago: 1921

Miss Jessie Lord of Lewiston was appointed treasurer of Hebron Academy at a meeting of the trustees according to a story in the Portland paper. She takes the place of Charles S. Erswell who is leaving the academy to take a  chemical engineering position in the west. Miss. Lord has been employed as bookkeeper at the academy for some time.

50 Years Ago: 1971

U.S. Rep William D. Hathaway of Auburn called upon his fellow House members Wednesday to enact legislation that would end the dumping of dangerous waste, radioactive, toxic industrial waste into US coastal waters. Under a proposal, sponsored by William Hathaway and several house members chemical and biological warfare materials would expressly be prohibited. The congressman said the measure “would prevent a recurrence of the dilemma which the federal government faced last summer, when because of its own lack of  foresight  was virtually compelled to dispose of several  thousand tons of highly volatile nerve gas in the ocean.”

25 Years Ago: 1996

Russ Dillingham, chief photographer for the Sun-Journal Sunday, will give a lecture and slide show Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Creative Photographic Center at the Bates Mill Complex. The hour-and-a-half presentation will combine personal and work-related images and stories. Professional and beginning photographers will benefit from the program which will include a combination of news, sports, scenic and personal photographs. All of the photos were taken in Maine, the majority from the Lewiston-Auburn community where Dillingham was born and raised. He resides in Lewiston with his wife, the former Ann Hecter, and their son Ryan. The audience is encouraged to ask questions and Dillingham will be available to critique portfolio and personal photos as well as to make suggestions on how to get started in a photography career.
