The University of Maine athletic department received clearance from the school’s administration on Friday to move forward with its spring sports seasons.

The women’s soccer team, which had its 2020 fall season canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic, will be the first to play, traveling to Merrimack College in North Andover, Massachusetts, for a 1 p.m. game on Sunday.

The baseball team is scheduled to open its season on Feb. 26 at Central Connecticut State College in New Britain, Connecticut, with the first of a three-game series.

Field hockey, which also had its fall season canceled, will open on Feb. 28 at Northeastern.

Softball will wait until March 6 for its opening games, a doubleheader at Army in West Point, New York.

Football is scheduled to open a six-game Colonial Athletic Association spring season at Delaware on March 6 at noon.

As of Friday morning, there was still no word about whether the Black Bears will be able to hold home football games at Alfond Stadium because of the state’s COVID-19 outdoor gathering limits. Maine is schedule to play Albany at home on March 13.
