PITTSFIELD — A 34-year-old man was transported to Sebasticook Valley Hospital with injuries that were not life threatening and a cat died in a Friday fire.

Crews responded to a fire at a home on North Main Street just after 1:15 a.m. Friday. All six people in the house, five adults and one teenager, made it out safely. All but one of the six cats in the house survived. The home sustained major damage, but is not considered a total loss.

“It started around the chimney area,” Pittsfield Deputy Fire Chief Dean Billings said. “There was just smoke and flames coming out of the building, a lot of heavy smoke.”

The man was taken to an area hospital with burns to his hands and arms. Officials think the fire started around a chimney on the second floor of the house, but the state fire marshal’s office is conducting an investigation to determine the official cause.

Pittsfield, Newport, Detroit and Hartland responded to the call. Crews were there for about four hours. The house did not have smoke detectors.

“Smoke detectors and escape routes are essential,” Billings said.
