DEAR SUN SPOTS: I’m looking for a children’s furry bunny costume (white, brown or grey) in size 7-8 or 8-10 and am hoping readers can assist me in finding one. I am willing to pay a reasonable price for it. My contact is 240-3738. — No name, Auburn

ANSWER: If no one responds through this column, I have seen bunny suits (cast off after Halloween, I suspect) at various Goodwill stores in the area.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I plan to attending a Fur Con convention this summer if things are going well. These events are fun and people show up in beautiful fursuits. Some folks make their own, but others buy them.

I’m looking for someone who can help me find a person or a company that makes these fursuits. You are very helpful to lots of people; keep up the good work.—No name, no town

ANSWER: As Ms. Sun Spots, I learn something new nearly every day and had no idea such a thing as a fur convention existed. If my readers didn’t either, here is a quick explanation courtesy of Wikipedia.

“A furry convention (also furry con or fur con) is a formal gathering of members of the furry fandom — people who are interested in the concept of fictional animal characters with human characteristics. These conventions provide a place for fans to meet, exchange ideas, transact business and engage in entertainment and recreation centered on this concept.”

So these gatherings started in the mid-1980s and now there are about 40 annual conventions worldwide.

“Fursuits did not become widely known until the rise of the internet in the mid-1990s.  Most early fursuit making was done on a hobby basis using guides released by members of the community. However, by the mid-2000s, fursuits were in such high demand that making them has become a viable business. Including used suits, the industry now sells millions of dollars’ worth of suits each year, and organizations such as sports teams are increasingly commissioning custom-made fursuits for their mascots.”

I found a link to someone who makes fursuits: https://www.furaffinity.net/user/ccsmascots. There are photos and more information here: https://www.facebook.com/CCSMascots/ and here: https://www.etsy.com/shop/CCSMascots. The latter company is in Oakland, Maine.

And as an extra helpful bonus, I found the website for you to make fur friends if you don’t already have it: https://new.mainefurs.org/
