REGION — Maine Free Snowmobile Weekend is March 5-7. The Jug Hill Riders snowmobile club in Livermore Falls will hold a ride-in 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 6, at the clubhouse on Diamond Road.

Hot dogs, chili and desserts will be available by donation to Jug Hill Riders. Membership signups will also be available.

Snowmobiles and vehicles are welcome. Club members will be there to help with traffic direction and to assist with required social distancing protocols. Mostly outside, food will be available in the clubhouse. Six-foot distancing will be maintained.

With Maine’s winter cold and snow settled in, folks are bundled up in their flannels and sitting near the fireplace. That is, unless one thrives in the outdoors, enjoys the smell of two-stroke fuel and fancies camaraderie.

A few early snow storms and colder temperatures have made the snowmobiling better than ever. The Jug Hill Riders have been hard at work redeveloping the club atmosphere.

“This season I have stepped into the helm,” interim club president Bob Martin said recently. “My philosophy is to bridge the gaps that existed before with volunteers. Everyone looks to join when snow is on the ground. My goal is to retain volunteers through the year. People are willing to invest more time locally given the global circumstances of the COVID era.

“We want to revive the connection with the community, the businesses and the people,” he added.

Current plans focus around sign work, mapping, and working with local businesses to promote their locations on the trails. This season has been off to an excellent start with weekday and weekend work parties for trail maintenance, bridge work and grooming.

Often finding ways to get outside in the winter months can be difficult. However, snowmobiling can present a unique opportunity to enjoy all that nature offers.

Jug Hill Riders will hold the remaining 2021 season meetings 2 p.m. Sundays at the clubhouse located on Diamond Road across from Revision Energy, or ITS 87 by snowmobile.
