At its March 8 meeting, newly elected Selectwoman Jamie Toohey was welcomed to the Waterford Board of Selectment. Logistics of the March 6 Town Meeting were mentioned, with  possible in person with masks and social distancing.

There was discussion about a call Deputy Town Clerk Betty Becker received at the town office about equipment repairs that should be done at Werner Park. This will be researched; Becker said that the Parks Committee will be responsible for any repairs to be done at Werner Park, funded by a donation from the Bear Mountain Grange in 2019.

Coach Patrick Lawler was to have attended the meeting to discuss Waterford sports and recreation, but was unable to make it and plans to attend the next meeting. Board members hope to be able to provide opportunities for local children to participate in town sports and recreational events, and realize that  state guidelines must be followed. The board is committed to having a town rec program when it is safe and feasible to do so.

Becker mentioned that she had received a call from an Aflac insurance agent about an additional insurance policy that could be made available to employees; it would not replace any policies that are currently in place. Board members suggested further conversation with the agent to determine whether this should be added to town employees’ insurance coverage.

•  A citizen informed the board that a town employee was seen trying to remove an item from the trash after a taxpayer had mistakenly deposited it into the demolition bin. The citizen was asking if this is a safety issue. Selectman Todd Sawyer suggested that if it can be retrieved safely, it’s okay, but if there is a risk of injury, it should be left where it is. He said that the cost is similar whether it goes into trash or recycling, but the town never wants to risk injury to an employee or taxpayer.

•  A motion was made to elect Selectman Randy Lessard the board chairperson, which was approved unanimously.

• Toohey was asked whether she needed folders, training, or other information. She will be provided a Selectman’s Manual.

The board went into Executive Session about two separate issues that needed to be discussed with the town’s legal counsel under Maine legal statute 1 M.R.S.A. §405 (6)(E).
