Robert C. Gill

RUMFORD – Robert C. Gill, 91, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 27, 2021. Robert resided in Rumford with his wife, the late Ruth “Midge” Kaulback Gill who passed away last June 2020. They were married for 69 years and were inseparable. Robert, commonly known as Bob among friends and family, was born on August 6, 1929 in Peru, Maine to Duncan and Lucille Vaughn Gill. He was raised in Peru and attended Stephens High School where he graduated in 1947. Bob and Midge were high school sweethearts who married on Sept. 2, 1950 at the Mexico First Baptist Church. They resided in Rumford where they raised their two children. Early on, Robert began working at the Oxford Paper Company before joining the Rumford Police Department where he proudly served the community for 25 years. In his retirement years, Bob worked as greenskeeper at the Oakdale Country Club and as a part-time postal worker delivering mail in the Virginia section of town where he lived. Bob was a lifelong member of the Rumford First Baptist Church and served as Deacon for many years. He was also a long-standing member of the Masonic Lodge and was a Kora Shriner. During retirement, Bob and Midge took up skiing and frequently could be found skiing under the lights at Black Mountain. Bob and Midge enjoyed traveling throughout the US, Canada, and even ventured across the ocean to Great Britain. They also made many long-distance trips to visit with family and were always there to help out in every way possible. Their passion was spending time with their beloved grandsons, and the boys cherished their adventures to Maine as well. When at home Bob and Midge enjoyed their daily visits to McDonalds. They always looked forward to meeting up with friends and keeping abreast of the news.Robert is survived by two children, daughter Debra Goodrich and husband Terry of Windsor, Mass. and son Douglas and wife Carol Murray of Brantingham, NY. He was the beloved “Grampa” of Jarod Goodrich (wife Cyndi) of Lenox, Mass.,Trevor Goodrich (wife Zhuhua) of Wellesley, Mass. and Adam Gill of Stockholm Sweden. Bob was the adored great grandfather of Riley, Caiden, Mason, and Korra. Bob and Midge were very proud of their family. Bob is also survived by two loving sisters, Marion Wyman of Smithville and Jean Worthley of Peru, two sisters-in-law, Gladys Gilbert of Rumford, and Ruby Greenwood of Newport, Vt.; and by many nieces and nephews as well.
