I am a big supporter of passenger rail in Maine and ride the Downeaster frequently. I would love to see passenger rail service extended to Lewiston-Auburn, but was disappointed to read in the March 31 Sun Journal article, “Lewiston council revives talks on passenger rail,” that local officials were considering a proposal to utilize the abandoned St. Lawrence & Atlantic tracks.
This line would terminate in Portland with no connection to further rail service via the Downeaster. Thus, it would only serve commuters between Portland and LA — service that could more readily be delivered using inter-city buses.
Linking passengers in LA to the full Amtrak route system makes the most sense, and negotiations with CSX over how to accommodate such an expansion would be very welcomed.
