Gary M. Tiner

GREENE – Gary M. Tiner, 93, of Greene died at his home on April 4, 2021, with his loving family at his side. He was born March 23, 1928, the son of Gary and Catherine Keough Tiner. Raised in Lewiston, he attended grade school there and graduated from Lewiston High in 1945.

Following graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving as an instructor of international code and as a sergeant and radio team chief in the newly formed 20th Signal Air-Ground Liason Company at Fort Bragg, N.C.

Following military service, he studied art and graduated from the New England School of Art in Boston. Later, he graduated from the University of Southern Maine at Gorham.

He was a teacher of art in the schools of Bolton Landing, N.Y., before returning to Lewiston in 1956 where he taught art in the 7th, 8th and 9th grades at Jordan Junior High and Montello Junior High Schools for a number of years. Later in his teaching career he became an art supervisor in the Lewiston elementary school system, retiring in 1980 after 27 years. He also taught adult education classes for the City of Auburn Recreation Department and at Lewiston High Evening School. After leaving the teaching profession Mr. Tiner was employed for 10 years as a newspaper staff artist for the Lewiston Sun Journal/Sunday.

He enjoyed fishing, especially brook fishing for trout and with his wife, Doris, seeking salmon and lake trout at Lake Auburn. In his later years, woodworking and travel occupied his time. An accomplished artist, he did commercial drawings and illustrations, signpainting and advertising layouts for many businesses. He also enjoyed athletics and as a young man was active on various teams in the Twin City baseball and softball leagues and was a member of the Fairlawn Golf and Country Club. He also belonged to the Maine Education Association, the Maine Retired Teachers and was a former member of the Lewiston Lodge of Elks and the New Auburn American Legion Post.

He is survived by his wife, Doris Brooks Chapin of Greene whom he married in 1985; two sons, Thomas Tiner and partner Judy Corkum of Sabattus, and John Tiner and wife Donna (Swan) Tiner of Augusta; a daughter, Susan Marr of Florida; four grandchildren, Catie Hanson of Florida, Cameron Marr of Lewiston, James Tiner and Sean Tiner of Augusta.

Gary was predeceased by his brothers, Earl Tiner of Lewiston and Robert Tiner Sr. of Auburn.
