A two-alarm fire destroyed a barn and at least two vehicles in Madison late Thursday evening, but firefighters from seven departments were able to save the home, keeping it cool even though the siding melted.

Crews were at the scene of the fire on Cedar Street in Madison for more than two hours, with the call coming in at 10:20 p.m. and crews leaving at 12:30 a.m. Friday.

“When we have a structure fire in the town of Madison, it comes in as an all-call which gives us Anson, Madison and Starks,” Madison Fire Chief Don French said. “Once I determined we needed more resources than that, I upgraded to a second alarm which gives me four more towns.”

The fire totally destroyed a 50-by-50-foot detached barn. There were no injuries and the fire was deemed accidental by the Office of State Fire Marshal.

The homeowners were inside the house watching television when the power went out. Once the breaker popped, they saw flames.

“It got a good jump on the homeowners before they saw the fire,” French said. “By the time we got there, it was a fully involved barn fire.”

Two vehicles were totally destroyed and one damaged by heat were outside. The outside siding of the home melted.

Tools, a small tractor, a snowmobile and some keepsakes were consumed by the flames. There were no injuries.

Mutual aid was provided from Anson, Starks, Skowhegan, Norridgewock, Solon and Athens fire departments. North New Portland covered the area as backup from the Anson station.

“When we first got on scene, the barn was totally gone,” French said. “Our main goal was to save the house and keep it cool.”
