Palaver Strings Feels Like Media photo
Palaver Strings Beehive Chamber Series: “Beyond the Offbeats,” will perform a livestreamed concert at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 24, from the Johnson Hall stage, at 280 Water St. in Gardiner.
The concert will feature viola duo Elizabeth Moore and Lysander Jaffe.
Moore, viola co-artistic director and programming director, grew up in midcoast Maine and was surrounded by music at an early age. She began studying violin at 6, but have earlier memories of hanging out in guitar cases along the back of the stage as her father played and called for contra dances. Whether playing folk music, participating in ensembles through Bay Chamber Concerts, or singing every chance she got, she developed my musical interests in a small yet supportive community.
Jaffe, viola co-artistic director, communications coordinator and evaluations committee, grew up in rural western Massachusetts, where his parents, both jazz musicians, raised their children in a rich musical environment. He started Suzuki violin at the age of 5 and in high school fell in love with the deep, introspective character of the viola, not to mention the viola jokes. Over the years he studied with Michelle Liechti, Delores Thayer, and Ahling Neu, and am deeply indebted to their wisdom and patience.
Palaver Strings is a musician-led string ensemble and nonprofit organization based in Portland. Founded in 2014, Palaver has established itself as a forward-thinking ensemble whose mission is rooted in community and creative programming. Palaver has toured widely throughout the United States, performing at the Kennedy Center and a celebration of the Lullaby Project at Carnegie Hall. Since 2019, Palaver’s musicians have been proud to call Portland home, producing over 20 concerts a year in the Portland area and offering quality music education through the Palaver Music Center.
