BALTIMORE  — Oakland’s 13-game winning streak ended Sunday as Austin Hays hit a pair of home runs, pitcher John Means had another stellar performance and the Baltimore Orioles beat the Athletics 8-1.

The A’s, who opened the season with six straight losses, put together their third-longest winning string since moving to Oakland in 1968.

Oakland won 14 in a row in 1988 and a then-American League record of 20 consecutive wins in 2002. Cleveland broke that mark with 22 straight in 2017 – the Athletics’ string had been the longest in the majors since that run by the Indians.

Means (2-0) had an additional two days of rest heading into this start because manager Brandon Hyde wants to keep his pitchers fresh. The left-hander allowed just one run on two hits with six strikeouts over 6 1/3 innings, lowering his ERA to 1.50 – best among AL starters.

Hays hit his first two homers of the season. Cedric Mullins had three hits for Baltimore, raising his average to .350.

The Orioles broke the game open with five runs in the eighth that began with a solo home run by Maikel Franco and included a bases-loaded walk by A’s reliever Deolis Guerra to Ryan McKenna, who earned his first major league RBI. A bases-loaded error by shortstop Elvis Andrus gave the Orioles their sixth run before Trey Mancini delivered a two-run single.

INDIANS 7, YANKEES 3: Franmil Reyes hit a three-run homer, tripled and stole his first career base, helping Cleveland avoid a four-game series sweep with a victory over New York in Cleveland.

Reyes homered in the fourth off Jameson Taillon (0-2) as Cleveland overcame a 3-0 deficit and took a 4-3 lead. Reyes a burly 6-foot-5, 265-pounder, led off the sixth with his second big league triple and scored on Jordan Luplow’s double against Nick Nelson for a 6-3 advantage.

Gio Urshela hit a two-run homer in the fourth off Triston McKenzie and Mike Ford followed with a solo shot five pitches later – New York’s first back-to-back homers this year. The Yankees, tied for last in the AL East at 9-12, were seeking their first four-game sweep in Cleveland since 1996.

Rookie Sam Hentges (1-0), making his second big league appearances following his debut Tuesday, allowed two hits in 1 2/3 innings of relief.

ROYALS 4, TIGERS 0: Danny Duffy pitched five scoreless innings, and Kansas City kept Detroit’s offense quiet again in a victory over the Tigers in Detroit.

A day after the Royals prevailed 2-1 in a game that took 2 hours, 10 minutes, Duffy (3-1) allowed four hits while striking out eight. He’s allowed one earned run in 23 innings this season.

Hunter Dozier hit a solo homer for the AL Central-leading Royals, who have won four straight. Kansas City has allowed only three runs through the first three games of this series.

Detroit starter Michael Fulmer yielded one hit in three scoreless innings, but reliever Tarik Skubal (0-3) gave up runs in the fifth and sixth. The Tigers have lost nine of 10.

BLUE JAYS 1, RAYS 0: Toronto starter Hyun Jin Ryu was forced to leave early because of a minor strain but five relievers completed the shutout, lifting the Blue Jays to a win in St. Petersburg, Florida.

Ryu gave up three hits and struck out five in 3 2/3 innings, but exited with right glute injury after giving up a single to Manuel Margot.

Tim Mayza (1-0) followed Ryu and got the final out in the fourth. He gave up two singles in the fifth – the last hits for the Rays – and was replaced by Tyler Chatwood, who worked out of the jam.

ANGELS 4, ASTROS 2: Shohei Ohtani’s tiebreaking solo home run in the eighth inning helped visiting Los Angeles snap a four-game skid.

It was the second consecutive game with a homer for the two-way star, who is tied for the MLB lead with seven home runs and who is scheduled to pitch on Monday.

A two-run homer by Yuli Gurriel tied it in the seventh inning before Ohtani sent a fastball from Luis Garcia (0-2) 440 feet into center field to put the Angels up 3-2.

Anthony Bemboom added an insurance run with an RBI single in the ninth.

WHITE SOX 8, RANGERS 4: Michael Kopech struck out a career-high 10 in just five innings, José Abreu homered and drove in three runs and Chicago won at home for its season-high fourth straight victory.

Kopech (2-0), making his second spot start in a week while pitching out of the bullpen, continued to impress after missing the 2019 season while recovering from Tommy John surgery and the 2020 season for personal reasons.

Kopech, who resides about 100 miles from Dallas in Tyler, Texas, overpowered Rangers hitters with his 97 mph fastball.

The 24-year-old right-hander allowed one run, on a homer by David Dahl, and four hits without allowing a walk in a career-high 87 pitches.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

METS 4, NATIONALS 0: Taijuan Walker pitched three-hit ball over seven innings in his first win for the Mets, J.D. Davis hit a two-run homer in the first off a faltering Patrick Corbin and New York beat visiting Washington to take two of three in the matchup of NL East rivals.

Corbin lost his 10th straight decision dating to last August.

Walker (1-1), who signed a $23 million, three-year contract as a free agent, made his fourth start.

He allowed a pair of leadoff runners but picked off Josh Harrison in the first and got help in the third when Victor Robles was thrown out trying to stretch a leadoff double to right, with Michael Conforto throwing to second baseman Jonathan Villar, who made the toss to Davis at third for the tag.

CARDINALS 5, REDS 2: Tyler O’Neill homered twice and Jack Flaherty tossed seven sharp innings as St. Louis beat visiting Cincinnati – the Reds’ seventh straight loss.

O’Neill, who came off the injured list on Friday after missing 13 games because of a right groin strain, hit solo home runs in the second and fifth innings.

The Reds’ skid is their worst since an eight-game slide from March 31-April 7, 2019.

Cincinnati Manager David Bell was ejected in the sixth inning. He became upset after Jonathan India was hit on the helmet by a pitch from Flaherty. India stayed in the game to run the bases but was removed after the inning.

BREWERS 6, CUBS 0: Brandon Woodruff outdueled Jake Arrieta with six dominant innings, and Milwaukee won in Chicago.

Woodruff (2-0) allowed two hits, struck out eight and walked two in his first win in 11 career appearances against Chicago. The 6-foot-4 right-hander has permitted one run and six hits in 19 innings covering three starts against the Cubs this year.

Luis Urías hit a two-run single during Milwaukee’s five-run ninth, helping the Brewers close out a 5-1 road trip.

ROCKIES 12, PHILLIES 2: Trevor Story hit a grand slam to cap a seven-run fourth inning, and Colorado overcame two solo home runs by Bryce Harper to beat Philadelphia in Denver.

Story hit his third career slam and second home run of the season on a 2-2 curveball from Dave Hale, sending the ball 433 feet into the left-field seats. Story did not hit his first home run of the season until Friday, in his 68th at-bat.

Harper hit a 430-foot drive to right-center in the first and a 468-foot drive that landed on the second deck above Philadelphia’s bullpen beyond right-center in the third, both off Sonny Gray (3-1). Harper, who has six homers, also threw out C.J. Cron at the plate from right field in the second inning trying to score on Dom Nunez’s single, which preserved a 1-0 lead.

GIANTS 4, MARLINS 3: Logan Webb pitched three-hit ball over seven scoreless innings and had a two-run triple for his first career extra-base hit as San Francisco won at home.

Mauricio Dubon added a pair of hits, including a squeeze-bunt single for San Francisco. Brandon Belt had a sacrifice fly and Jason Vosler collected his first hit in the majors.

Jesús Aguilar homered for the third consecutive day for Miami. The Marlins are 1-3 on their 10-game road trip.

Webb (1-1) matched his career-best with eight strikeouts and pitched with runners on base in six of the first seven innings but worked around the trouble each time. He allowed three singles and walked three.

INTERLEAGUE

TWINS 6, PIRATES 2: Gregory Polanco homered and had three hits, Clay Holmes and the bullpen held down the scuffling Twins and Pittsburgh completed a successful trip by winning in Minneapolis.

Starter Wil Crow, activated before the game, allowed one run and four hits but needed 81 pitches to get through four innings.

Holmes (1-0) pitched 1 1/3 hitless innings for his first win since July 2, 2019, against the Chicago Cubs. Sam Howard got two outs, Chris Stratton allowed Nelson Cruz’s seventh homer in a three-hit eighth, and David Bednar struck out two in a perfect ninth.

Pittsburgh finished a 6-3 trip. The Pirates’ bullpen is 4-0 with a 1.04 ERA in its past 12 games.

NOTES

BREWERS: Milwaukee is moving along with its plan for Christian Yelich after an MRI on the slugger’s strained lower back showed no major issues.

Yelich hasn’t played since April 11. He was eligible to come off the injured list this weekend, but the 2018 NL MVP was sent back to Milwaukee because Manager Craig Counsell said the outfielder had hit a “plateau” in his recovery.

CUBS: Reliever Ryan Tepera had his three-game suspension for throwing at Milwaukee’s Brandon Woodruff reduced to two games.

Tepera began his suspension with Sunday’s series finale against the Brewers. The Cubs begin a four-game series at Atlanta on Monday night.
