DEAR SUN SPOTS: On Friday, April 30, mid-morning, I lost an earring, evidently while taking off my mask while I was either leaving my doctor’s appointment or shopping. I had been at 12 High St. in Lewiston the first time I removed my mask and the second time I had left Big Lots in Auburn from the door closest to Planet Fitness.

The earring is a stud-style, half hoop with semi-precious stones and was given to me for my 20th anniversary. It has sentimental meaning, and if it’s returned to me I’d be very grateful. I can be reached at 782-7895. — No name, Auburn

ANSWER: Wearing earrings with a mask is tricky, but I don’t feel totally dressed without them! I hope some kind, honest person has found your keepsake and returns it to you right away. Let us know.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: If someone is missing a set of house keys on a TD Bank holder, I found them on the sidewalk on Blanchette St. in Lewiston on April 27. You can reach me at 782-8314. — No name, no town

ANSWER: Hopefully these keys belong to a Sun Spots reader and they will see this. Let us know what happens. My fingers are crossed for a happy ending.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I have an old Kindle that I need a cover for. I have checked Amazon and Etsy, but have had no luck. My Kindle has a keypad and measures 8 x 5 inches. I hope someone in Sun Spots land knows where I can find one. My phone number is 783-0300. — Pauline, Auburn

ANSWER: I’m wondering if a custom cover could be made from quilted fabric, lined faux leather, or some other material along those lines. I’m picturing something that looks like an envelope and has a button, snap or Velcro. Oh yes, a zipper would work but the other closures just seem easier to me.

Kindle owners in Sun Spots land, if you have ideas, please write in and of course, if someone wants to sew up a case for our fellow reader, please contact her.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: Does anyone have a good recommendation for a squirrel-proof feeder? I love watching the birds outside my kitchen window at my apartment, but the red squirrels are aggressive and have broken my feeder. — Betty, Minot

ANSWER: The feeder I use is fantastic and squirrels cannot get into it. Believe me, they’ve tried! I got my feeder on Amazon, but first try the local hardware store or garden center. My Audubon (NA32431) Squirrel-Resistant Tube Bird Feeder is the best bird feeder I’ve ever had. It holds a lot of seed and is easy to refill and clean. It’s also really sturdy.

If you’re able, another friendly thing you can do to help our feathered friends is to devise a container garden filled with bird-friendly flowers and plants that bear seeds the birds enjoy snacking on.

Zinnias, sunflowers, coreopsis, black-eyed Susan, strawberries, and millet are all good choices that can be planted in containers.

And don’t forget to provide them with water. Just a shallow dish with a couple inches of water that you change every day or so should be all you need.
