River Arts in Damariscotta invites artists to submit work to a juried show, “Land and Sea.” The deadline for entry is 4 p.m. Saturday, May 22, and the show is to run from May 26 to July 3.

The theme “Land and Sea” is open to personal interpretation by the artists and can include realistic as well as abstract works. All media — including but not limited to painting, sculpture, photography, and fiber — can be entered. Artists can enter two pieces with a size limit of 26 inches, including frame. Or artists can enter one larger piece with a size limit of 48 inches, including frame.

Jane Dahmen, the juror, is a contemporary landscape painter whose work is inspired by the natural environment of midcoast Maine. Known for her large immersive works, Dahmen said, “The natural world is my point of departure, but playing with the wet colors leads me into emotional terrain, and the form, color, and surface texture evolve as the painting comes alive,” according to a news release from River Arts.

Dahmen exhibits her work at the Portland Art Gallery, and it can be viewed online at janedahmen.com.

Since 2013, Dahmen has hosted Talking Art in Maine: Intimate Conversations, a series of one-on-one live conversations with other Maine artists at the Lincoln Theater in Damariscotta. In these conversations with other artists, as in her own artwork, Dahmen is focused on creative exploration as she declares, “Pushing boundaries and risking failure is what leads to good art and it is inspiring to hear firsthand the challenges artists face.”

For members the entry fee is $15, and for nonmembers it is $25. All submitted works must be for sale. Works to be considered must be delivered in person during regular business hours. Entry forms and more information are available in the gallery or at riverartsme.org.

The gallery is located at 36 Elm St.
