Taylor Snyder and Greg Jones hit back-to-back home runs off Frank German in the fourth inning, lifting the Hartford Yard Goats to a 5-3 win Sunday over the Portland Sea Dogs in Hartford, Connecticut.
Snyder gave the Yard Goats a 3-2 lead with a two-run homer to left-center, and Jones followed with a drive to right-center, knocking German out of the game.
Johan Mieses hit his sixth home run of the season – a two-run shot, to put the Sea Dogs ahead 2-1 in the third inning. Ronaldo Hernandez added a solo home run in the ninth.
Portland now heads to New Hampshire for a six-game series against the Fisher Cats that starts Tuesday.
COLLEGES
BASEBALL: Sean Lawlor and Ryan Turenne each belted two home runs, and Jake Marquez and Scout Knotts also homered and drove in four runs apiece as the Black Bears (19-18, 15-15 America East) outslugged the Hawks (16-18, 16-18) in West Hartford, Connecticut.
Jacob Small earned the win with 3 2/3 innings of one-hit relief after a long rain delay.
FOOTBALL: Eric Schmid threw for three touchdowns, including a 10-yarder to Ife Adeyi with 16 seconds left, and Sam Houston wrapped up the longest and most unusual college football season with its first Football Championship Subdivision national title, beating top-seeded South Dakota State 23-21 in Frisco, Texas.
Jequez Ezzard caught two touchdown passes for No. 2 seed Sam Houston (10-0). He also had a 5-yard catch on fourth-and-3 to extend the final 16-play, 65-yard drive, after Schmid converted an earlier fourth-and-1 with a 9-yard run.
South Dakota State (8-2) went ahead 21-17 on Isaiah Davis’ third TD run, an 85-yarder with 5:41 left. Davis finished with 178 yards on 14 carries.
TENNIS
ITALIAN OPEN: Rafael Nadal beat a tired Novak Djokovic 7-5, 1-6, 6-3 for a record-extending 10th Italian Open title.
The top-ranked Djokovic spent nearly five hours on court Saturday, when he had to rally for a rain-delayed quarterfinal victory over Stefanos Tsitsipas before winning another three-setter over local favorite Lorenzo Sonego in the semifinals. Nadal, meanwhile, beat Reilly Opelka in 1½ hours.
In the women’s final, reigning French Open champion Iga Swiatek routed Karolina Pliskova, 6-0 6-0.
SOCCER
ENGLAND: Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker scored a dramatic goal in the fifth minute of stoppage time to earn a 2-1 win over West Bromwich Albion and keep alive his team’s chances of qualifying for the Champions League.
Alisson came up for a corner and, unmarked, glanced home a header from Trent Alexander-Arnold’s cross.
The Brazil international is the sixth goalkeeper to score a goal in Premier League history – the first with a header.
No Liverpool goalkeeper had previously scored a competitive goal.
Liverpool is one point behind fourth-place Chelsea and three behind third-place Leicester with two games remaining. Leicester plays Chelsea on Tuesday.
• Everton’s slim hopes of qualifying for next season’s Champions League were extinguished by a 1-0 loss at home against last-place Sheffield United.
MLS: Adam Buksa entered as a substitute in the 83rd minute and scored three minutes later to lift the New England Revolution (3-1-2) to a 1-0 win at home against Columbus (1-2-2).
The buildup to Buksa’s goal began on a quick restart after a foul near midfield. Carles Gil fed Brandon Bye up the right channel and Bye’s cross connected with Buska inside the 6-yard box.
The Revs moved alone into first place in the Eastern Conference and extended their home winning streak to three games.
SPAIN: Luis Suárez scored an 88th-minute winner as Atlético Madrid rallied to beat Osasuna 2-1 and move one win away from claiming its first La Liga title since 2014.
Atlético enters the final round two points in front of Real Madrid, which stayed in contention by winning 1-0 at Athletic Bilbao. Madrid has a better head-to-head tiebreaker against its city rival.
Barcelona dropped out of contention, losing 2-1 at home against Celta Vigo.
FRANCE: Paris Saint-Germain routed Reims 4-0 to take the title race to the last day, closing to within one point of Lille, which drew 0-0 at home against Saint-Etienne.
Both teams are away next weekend, with PSG at Brest and Lille facing Angers.
WOMEN’S CHAMPIONS LEAGUE: Barcelona stormed to its first title by scoring after just 32 seconds and outclassing Chelsea, 4-0, in Gothenburg, Sweden.
