SABATTUS — A Greene man escaped serious injury Wednesday when his pickup truck went off the road and flipped because he had been counting cash while driving, police said.

Nicholas Landry, 32, was southbound on Middle Road in his 2007 Chevrolet 1500 pickup truck shortly before 6:30 a.m. after leaving a restaurant where he had just cashed a paycheck, Lt. Daniel Davies wrote in a media statement.
He was traveling at roughly 50 mph when, distracted while counting his cash, his truck veered off the road, onto the shoulder, and clipped a mailbox at 843 Middle Road.
Landry wasn’t able to regain control of the truck, which crossed the driveway at that address, traveled into a roadside ditch and struck a culvert at 849 Middle Road. The truck went airborne for nearly 70 feet before “nosediving” into the ground, Davies wrote.
The truck flipped one more time before landing on its wheels facing north in the front yard of 849 Middle Road, Davies wrote.
Landry had been wearing a seatbelt and the driver’s side airbag deployed. The only injuries he sustained were a “slight bump on his head” and back pain, Davies wrote.
Landry’s truck was a total loss.
Landry was not charged in the crash, Davies wrote.
Landry cleaned up the driveway of the elderly man who lived there. He also promised to replace the mailbox his vehicle struck, Davies wrote
“I would like to take this opportunity to remind the motoring public of the dangers associated with distracted driving,” Davies wrote.
“It does not have to be a cell phone that distracts you. It could be anything that takes your eyes off the road and takes your mind away from the operation of the vehicle you are driving,” he wrote. “From make-up to electronic devices to counting money, one moment in time can result in a lifetime of regret if it doesn’t take your life otherwise. Please, when behind the wheel, drive responsibly.”
