Regarding genetically modified plants designed to absorb more carbon (“One Woman’s Quest to Save the Planet with Plants,” May 16): do we really hope that technology is going to save us from the ravages of technology? We seem to be looking more to ourselves than to the creation we were born into for solutions to the problems we continue to create for ourselves.

We are at war with nature, of which we are an integral part, determined to prevent nature and other people from spoiling our fun. Without learning to live in peace with all of creation we are doomed. We need a truly holistic pro-life agenda that can never come from science, legislation or violence.

Mutually-assured destruction may not be limited to our increasing stockpiles of nuclear arms or even our greenhouse gases, but may also include what we think of as our simple daily choices.

We are the problem.

So where is our hope?
