AUBURN — Jameson Treadwell has been named the 23rd recipient of the Donald M. Gay Annual Scholarship. He has been accepted by the University of Maine, Orono, as a Merit Scholar.

“I am really excited about continuing my music career as a member of the UMO Pep Band and developing other musical opportunities there,” said Jameson, a 2021 graduate of Edward Little High School, according to a news release from Bob Gardner of the scholarship committee..

William Buzza, ELHS band director, said in his recommendation letter, “One thing about Jameson that I am most impressed about is how he puts the need of the band ahead of his own interests. I remember asking him what instruments he most liked to play. His response was, ‘I’ll play whatever instrument you want, Mr. Buzza.’ Over his high school years, this openness to new experiences and services to the group has seen Jameson playing trumpet, French horn, mellophone, valve trombone and piano, depending on what we most needed at the time.”

Treadwell has been a leader in the concert band, chamber choir and jazz band, along with the marching band, Pep Band and Honors Music every year he was eligible.

“This love for music took place when I was barely 5 years old. I began taking piano lessons from Mr. Mike Davis (this continued for several years). I remember he played some pre-recorded music and drew me up to the piano. It was like magic, and I knew then I was beginning my lifelong love for music.” said Treadwell.

Treadwell confessed to some stress in staying on top of his academic studies considering all of his musical commitments. “I knew I had to increase my time management skills so I buckled down and made that happen,” said Treadwell.

His high school academic standing indicates his success as he finished his high school years well above the top 20%. Prior to leaving for Orono, he will participating in “Camp Rock” this summer at L-A Community Little Theatre’s Performing Arts Center.

The scholarship was created by the Edward Little Class of 1951 at its 50th reunion and this year awarded its first $10,000 scholarship to Treadwell.
