The Maine Sports Hall of Fame is pleased to announce the winners of five $5000 scholarships.
They are Kerrigan Anuszewski of Winthrop, William Cassidy of Edward Little in Auburn, Parker Desjardins of Forest Hills in Jackman, Morgan Porter of Scarborough, and Morgan Schwinn of Washington Academy in East Machias.
The winners were selected from 186 completed applications. “Even after coping with the pandemic during their junior and senior years of high school, this group of scholar-athletes continued to impress,” said MSHOF Vice-Chair Lisa Hook. “They remained focused on their academics and athletics albeit in a new format, and found creative ways of staying connected to their communities.”
Anuszewski is a multi-sport varsity letter winner and All-State field hockey player from Winthrop High School. Active in school theater as well as volunteering in her local community, she has been Class President throughout high school and will be graduating as valedictorian. Kerrigan has committed to Bates College where she plans on continuing her field hockey career.
Cassidy has won eleven varsity letters at Edward Little, not lettering in baseball as a junior because of Covid-19. He is a two-time All-State selection in hockey and a finalist for the Travis Roy Award. He has been Class Treasurer all four years and will graduate as valedictorian. Accepted at Notre Dame, he will attend the University of Maine to major in Engineering.
Parker Desjardins is a 2,000-point scorer and Maine Association of Basketball Coaches (MABC) Free Throw Champion. He was selected as a Mr. Maine Basketball Finalist for his role in leading Forest Hills High School to back-to-back state championships. He is the valedictorian of his class and an Eagle Scout. In the fall, Parker will be attending Thomas College where he will continue to play basketball.
Morgan Porter of Scarborough swam to state championships in the 500-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke. She has served on the student council and has been active in public service while maintaining a 4.0 GPA. She was also recently selected as an Academic All-American. She will continue her education and swimming career at Bates.
Morgan Schwinn of Washington Academy is a three-time All-State selection in volleyball. (No team was selected for this year.) She is Vice President of her class and has maintained an active role in her community while maintaining a 4.0 GPA. She will attend the University of Maine where she intends to play volleyball at the club level.
“As outstanding as these candidates are, it was difficult to select them from such a talented field,” MSHOF Executive Director Bill Green said. “Maine is producing some sensational kids and they are coming from all over.”
