Mary Greenleaf Keough

TOPSHAM – On June 7, 2021, 12 days before her 79th birthday and a month after our 26th wedding anniversary, my wife, Mary Greenleaf Keough completed her life’s journey at home in Topsham.

Mary, the daughter of Carlton and Fanny Greenleaf was born in Lewiston, June 19, 1942.

During Mary’s illness, life became a hurried and unexpected time for us. What we thought may have been a lesser heart problem turned out to be a brain tumor like the late Senator McCain and President Biden’s son, Beau. She accepted her three-month death notice like a Viking. All who knew her from earlier days as the flower lady from Saunder’s Florist on Main Street would have been proud.

For nearly 40 years Mary was the president of the Mount Auburn Cemetery Corp. She was a founding member of the Lewiston’s Wine and Food Society and a non-traditional honor student at the University of Southern Maine.

Mary loved animals, and some might remember Mary as the lady who kept a Morgan horse in her back yard on Main Street which too often managed to escape its paddock and run free, or maybe the little lady with a big dog. Mary had three Great Danes (at different times) that kept her company as she made the store deposits at the bank.

I remember other days; when we peddled our bikes near the airport in Auburn, kayaked the lakes and waterways and the times we climbed the mountains of Maine. There were memorable First Friday wine tastings and open house celebrations and lot’s of special wine dinners like her 70th surprise birthday when I rented a limo to take our party goer’s to Maurice’s restaurant. But mostly, I remember so many people who had warm feelings for Mary.
