100 Years Ago: 1921

The largest throng of the season went to Lake Grove and vicinity all day Sunday. Every boat and canoe was engaged hours ahead and the electrics were crowded. The regular summer season of open air musical comedy opens today in the Lake Grove theater.

50 Years Ago: 1971

The world-famous Royal Lipizzan Stallions of Austria will make their initial appearance in this area when they perform at Lewiston Memorial Armory, Friday, July 1, at 8 pm. Brought here by Col.Ottomor J. Hermann, the 30 horse equestrian ballet stars will be presented in a program highlighted by the classical “airs above the ground” (as seen in the Walt Disney movie, “Miracle of the White Stallions”) and including such “airs” as multiple caprioles, courbettes, levades, langsades and pirouettes, set off by Haute Ecole ‘dancing steps’ like the piaff, Spanish march and the passage, all performed on the ground. “Many of the riders are members of the illustrious Hermann family, who through seven generations have trained and ridden Lipizzaners in classical equitation for the Royal House of Hapsburg.

25 Years Ago: 1996

Chelsea Clinton has joined dozens of church-group volunteers in repairing poor people’s homes in Kentucky this week. During the day, President Clinton’s 16-year-old daughter works with about 70 other volunteers for the Appalachia Service Project, a ministry based in Tennessee. At night, Chelsea — like everyone else — sacks out in a sleeping bag in a classroom at Jackson City High School. They eat in the school cafeteria. The White House said the first daughter will not be giving any interviews.
